All is not well in the world of domain names. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) is under sustained calls for reform, break-up and even closure.

Icann was founded in California in 1988 as a non-profit corporation when the US Department of Commerce stopped running the Domain Name System (DNS). Today it is under attack from internet experts including one of its former board members; and from many of the registry firms that manage country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) and regional internet registries (RIRs).
