We learned from Legal Week (31 October) that IBA vice president Francis Neate is disappointed at the City’s “patchy” attendance at the Durban conference. Why has this happened when, during recent years, the UK contingent has been one of the largest at the event?
Under new management, the IBA has refocused its role as the mouthpiece and guardian of lawyers around the world. This includes new educational programmes – one with the College of Law – and a higher profile for human rights work. Jurisdictions restricting access to law can expect a letter or visit from the Human Rights Institute, co-chaired by Lord Goldsmith until he became Attorney General.
