The Bar Council has caved in to pressure from the commercial and Chancery bars and voted overwhelmingly to reject a controversial plan to impose a £3.5m training levy on wealthy barristers.
The scheme, put forward by a working party led by former Cabinet Office permanent secretary Sir Robin Mountfield, was defeated by 78 votes to one at a meeting on 16 November.
