Every trainee must breathe a sigh of relief on walking through the doors of their chosen law firm on the first day of their training contract. They have at least six sets of exams behind them and now they are ready for the real world of work.

Eight (or 12) hours later, as they make their way home clutching a full pack detailing their training programme for the next two years, and a tantalising hint of the continuing professional development regime that follows, they might be entitled to ask, “If I have passed so many exams, why do I need to go on doing so much training? What is the point?”.
