What is the remit of your role as professional standards director with the Commerce and Industry (C&I) group?
To promote the views and issues affecting in-house lawyers, ensuring that they are taken into account and debated in the development/definition and implementation of regulations affecting solicitors.
What do you consider to be your main challenges in the coming year in your role for the C&I Group?
The relaxation of Rule 4 and multi-disciplinary practices. In March the Law Society confirmed that its ultimate goal is to enable solicitors employed by businesses to provide legal services direct to the public as long as consumers are guaranteed the same level of protection as in private practice. For these changes to be effected, appropriate standards and regulation must be set in place. It is important that the in-house community’s voice is heard on this. It is increasingly apparent that change is imminent. In-house lawyers will be affected – some businesses are already exploring new ways to deliver legal services.
