The judicial appointments commissioner, Sir Colin Campbell, has vowed to investigate the barriers preventing solicitors from becoming judges, on the back of his damning report into the judicial appointments system.

Speaking to Legal Week on the eve of the launch of his first annual report (7 October), Campbell acknowledged that the current appointments system was “geared up for the Bar” and said he would be investigating ways of easing the path for solicitors to the senior echelons of the judiciary.
“We will be definitely looking into this issue and I am due to have a meeting with the London Solicitors Litigation Association,” he said.
