Internet filtering software has come a long way since its introduction in the early ’90s. Early versions of filtering software products were used by parents as a tool to protect their children.
This worked by blocking access to inappropriate websites, predominantly those with pornographic content. Internet filtering in those days mainly worked by the use of simple keyword blocking, which offered some protection, but without any weighting or dictionary facilities, it often proved a crude and not always efficient method.
