In today’s high-tech society, businesses of all sizes are now critically reliant on IT. The medium- to large-sized law firms have distinct budgets and departments to manage the needs and risks that this reliance brings. However, most small firms do not maintain the mindset or knowledge to accomplish this fully. As such, their use of IT, although being an enabler, is a liability to their business.
The major focus of these companies is on their core business. Although they encompass IT applications and networks to drive this wholeheartedly, the use of a professional IT organisation to advise, manage and secure their environment is generally ignored. It seems common practice for such organisations to rely on a department of one or two IT staff, or willing and IT-enthused staff, who can cover general day-to-day IT needs in addition to their salaried duties.
