The urge to merge continues unabated among law firms. According to Hildebrandt International, there were 76 major law firm mergers in 2000 – the record to beat. With 24 major mergers in the first quarter, 2002 may well surpass this number.

Market conditions are driving these mergers. As clients expand geographically and their businesses become more complex, they need law firms that can provide experienced lawyers with specialised knowledge whenever they are required, no matter what the time zone.
