Online dispute resolution (ODR) is a very much talked about subject matter, but what is it? And is it more than just a fashion?

The term online dispute resolution certainly means different things to different people. Collating the different uses of the term, one could say that ODR is information technology and telecommunications applied to alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Or that ODR is an offspring of ADR. Like ADR, it generally has the same advantages over litigation of greater efficiency, greater party control and lower costs – in fact, the introduction of technology increases the advantages of ADR over litigation.
