Shearman & Sterling’s head of private equity has joined Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in a rare switch from one of New York’s leading firms to a West Coast rival.
John Herbert started at Gibson Dunn’s New York office on 1 July.

Commenting on his move, Herbert said: “Gibson Dunn gives me a broader platform to do private equity.”
Another reason for the move, he said, was that he would be reunited with former Shearmans partner Dennis Friedman. The pair worked closely in the leveraged buyout market in the 1980s.
