While City firms including the likes of Linklaters and Norton Rose struggle to build up credible private equity practices, established player SJ Berwin has been busy mapping out the next market growth area: hedge funds.
The firm has just hired associate Julie Richard from New York hedge fund specialists Schulte Roth & Zabel and former Landwell tax lawyer Martin Cornish to help develop a specialised practice. The move is not without foundation – in the past decade the market has grown rapidly with total worldwide hedge fund assets up from £27bn in 1990 to £383bn at the end of last year, according to financial research company HFR.
