Law firm partners in their 60s are a bit like baby pigeons – you very rarely see them. But the impression that partners in the top business law firms rarely reach the ripe old age of 55, let alone 60, is at odds with the findings in this week’s Big Question survey.

Despite the trend in the City for people to retire at ever-earlier ages, one-in-three of the Big Question’s panel of 100 leading solicitors (34%) are in firms that still operate a retirement age of 65, while most of the rest are in firms that have settled on 60 as the correct age at which partners should seek alternative pursuits.
