The continued slowdown in the global economy coupled with the events of 11 September have resulted in law firms becoming distinctly conservative in their recruitment strategies. Although firms are still recruiting, they are not doing so with the same appetite and urgency displayed in the past 18 months.

March 2002 is fast approaching, at which time hundreds of trainee solicitors will qualify. There are real concerns among these trainees that there will be a repeat performance of the early 1990s, which, while saving costs in the short-term for the law firms, in our view, could have disastrous long-term results.
