TABLEAt BDO Stoy Hayward we carry out an annual survey of barristers’ chambers, in conjunction with the Bar Council. The survey covers the whole Bar in England and Wales, but it also provides us with a wealth of information about the commercial and chancery Bar in particular.

We estimate that the total income of the Bar is between £1.4bn-£1.6bn. Our survey analyses the breakdown of barristers’ practices by work type and — using this analysis — we estimate that the commercial and chancery Bar accounts for around 20%, or £280m-£320m, of the Bar’s total income.
