The events of 11 September threw the aviation industry into chaos. And in-house lawyers for the airlines, aviation insurers and the broader insurance industry have been immersed in a myriad of legal issues thrown up in the aftermath of the attacks.

For in-house counsel at the airlines, one of the most immediate issues was whether the industry should receive compensation from the Government for losses sustained by the attack or whether there should be state aid put in place to support airlines.
