Gale Klappa, the former chief executive of SWEB, has compared the potential for Bristol within the UK economy with the position that California has had in recent years in the US. Bristol has not achieved this goal yet, but the 1990s undoubtedly set it on its way.
For those practising law in Bristol that has been good news and will continue to be so if this development is sustained. However, for the more successful Bristol law firms both the growth in commercial activity and the city’s regional importance has not been enough in itself to sustain the growth of firms which have not only expanded their work for local clients, but also well beyond what might be seen as their natural geographical boundaries.
