Following the tragic events of 11 September the European Union (EU) has proposed new measures for combating terrorism and tightening up arrest and extradition procedures.
Governments worldwide are now focusing on terrorist money. President George W Bush has signed an order freezing the assets of a list of groups and individuals linked to international terrorism. It is also reported that Gordon Brown has ordered banks to check their records for such accounts and has asked the FSA to circulate the US banned list to all UK financial institutions. The UK Government is also proposing that EU ministers expedite the Second Money Laundering Directive.
