The Football League has appointed first in-house lawyer.
Nicholas Craig joined the League, which represents 72 division one to three football clubs, from Manchester firm Widdows Pilling.
“I intend to give it my best shot,” said the 27 year old Craig.
Craig reports to chief executive David Burns and will give legal advice and co-ordinate external advice. The League uses a spread of outside law firms including Hammond Suddards Edge, although individual clubs appoint their own lawyers. Hammonds today announced its merger with niche sports firm Townleys.
Craig said it was too early to say whether the League would hire more internal lawyers or review outsourcing arrangements. He said that the position was created because of an increase in Football related business ventures. “There is more money coming into football these days,” he said.
Craig is charged with a review of the League’s dispute regulations and will review stadium safety and customer service procedure. He has assumed responsibility for advising the League on its administration, and will give legal advice on employment and contract law.
