Weil Gotshal & Manges has relocated its top corporate lawyer to London in a bid to bolster its M&A and private equity practice.In a sign of the American firm’s commitment to its London office, global corporate head Stephen Jacobs, will relocate from New York in July and will work closely with head of the London office Mike Francies and corporate head Paul Claydon.Francies will retain his role as London head.The move comes just six months after the firm’s global banking head Ron Daitz was moved to London in the aftermath of several key banking departures from the office.Corporate partner Tom Roberts has become the new head of the firm’s New York corporate department.Weil Gotshal executive partner Stephen Dannhauser said: “It is important that our senior partners work with our London and European offices to pursue opportunities in the European markets.”Jacobs made his name acting on a number of hostile deals involving companies such as Macmillan, Disney, Gillette and National Intergroup.Recent transactions include FleetBoston’s take-over of Summit Bankcorp and Loreal’s acquisition of Maybelline.The firm is recruiting aggressively within Europe at present and has today announced the recruitment of four new partners to its Frankfurt office. Francies said: “This news, coupled with the relocation of Steve Jacobs, shows our commitment to Europe and the continued expansion of our European and private equity practice.”
