GlaxoSmithKline: James Beery, the new head of legal at merged pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) will retire in May. Rupert Bondy, who was vice president and associate general counsel with SmithKline Beecham before the merger at the end of last year, will succeed him. Meanwhile, former Glaxo Wellcome head of legal Stephen Cowden is to head the legal function at Reed Elsevier. He is the second UK in-house lawyer at the publishing giant.

British Telecom: Group general counsel Alan Whitfield resigned last month and will join tied law firm KLegal. Whitfield’s deputy, Anne Fletcher, who had been set to head the legal team at the BBC, has been appointed to the top legal post. She will be responsible for co-ordinating the restructuring of the 250-strong team. (See analysis pages 22-30.)
