Standing on the threshold of the 21st century is exciting and challenging for law firm technology planners. Not only is this an excellent time to develop law firm technology strategy, but it is an opportunity to take stock and undertake a critical appraisal of past successes and failures.

Technology creates new efficiencies, economies and possibilities. It allows law firms to unlock value in historical work product and enrich human interaction with the computer. If we apply Metcalf’s Law of Networks to a knowledge-based environment such as ours, the value of linking lawyers through a common interface – the intranet – increases the value of the firm’s network by the square of the number of participants, if not by more.
