In last week’s extract from Transforming the Law, I introduced the ‘Grid’ – a model that I have developed to help explain the complex relationships between IT, information and knowledge. Figure 1 shows the version of the grid that has been adapted for legal purposes. The four quadrants of this legal grid represent four broad categories of systems in law firms:

- bottom left: back-office technology;
- top left: client relationship systems;
-bottom right: internal knowledge systems; and
-top right: online legal services.
