Hundreds of English lawyers working in Europe are breaking the European Union’s (EU’s) Right of Establishment Directive by failing to register with their local Continental Bar, according to the Law Society.

A large number of EU lawyers working in England and Wales are also infringing the new directive by failing to register with the society. According to Law Society figures, only 84 English solicitors working in other EU countries have registered with the bars there, while just 156 lawyers from EU countries have registered with the Law Society to work in England and Wales.
