In April 1986, a nuclear reactor in Chernobyl, northern Ukraine, blew up. It spread a radioactive cloud westward over Europe as far as Ireland.
The reactor was one of four electricity-generating reactors in Chernobyl built to a Soviet design. A combination of human error and technical design shortcomings caused the accident.
