A Silicon-Valley company, public for 15 years, gets a letter from its outside counsel, a legendary US law firm. The letter blithely informs the company that, in two weeks’ time, their professional relationship will be ended. A pallet loaded with company documents arrives a few days later.

The CFO responsible for legal services develops apoplexy. The CEO calls a partner at the firm, an old friend who originally developed his business. He begs and pleads, and the firm relents. The company returns the pallet of documents at its own expense.
