Until recently, claims against the Spanish legal profession were rare. The most likely consequence of a lawyer’s negligence was the loss of the client or a complaint to their professional body.

This has changed. Spanish clients are more aware of their right to receive proper advice and of their civil remedies if they are badly advised. Spanish lawyers practising today need to do more than get the procedural issues right. They must also act professionally and efficiently to avoid facing claims.
In the UK we may take such necessities as given. But in Spain the threat of negligence claims is recent and radical.
