Just one of the four Inns of Court has backed the Bar Council’s campaign for the introduction of compulsory funded pupillages, illustrating the highly divisive nature of the issue.
In its submission to the Bar Council’s consultation paper on funded pupillages, Inner Temple warns that a failure to act could result in government intervention and even the abolition of the pupillage system.
But the other three inns say chambers should not be forced to pay their pupils – and even Inner Temple says an exemption system should be put in place.
