Fairness was the reason that was stated for raising the cap in awards for unfair dismissal cases before employment tribunals last autumn from £12,000 to £50,000. The change was enshrined as one of the measures in the Employment Relations Act 1999. “This provision sends a message to employers that unfair dismissal is a serious issue,” explains a spokesperson for the Department of Trade & Industry.
