A Baker & McKenzie pay clerk in New York who has pleaded guilty to embezzling $7m (£4.4m) of the firm’s money was only caught after the firm introduced a new computer system, which spotted the loss.

Dennis Masellis, who had been in the payroll department of Bakers’ New York office for 12 years, admitted to the New York Supreme Court last week that he had siphoned the money from the office’s payroll account.
Bill Linklater, a litigation partner at Bakers’ New York office, said no client money had been stolen and no client had been affected by the theft.
