Carillion Advice Services (CAS) – part of Carillion’s in-house legal team – is not just saving the company cash on external legal spend, it is generating revenue too by providing legal services to outside clients, making it a clear winner of the In-House Legal Department Innovation award.

CAS was first established for its legal aid expertise and now provides a range of services to Carillion and other clients, including a document and contract review process (for contracts worth up to £50m), which uses a traffic light system to flag up potential risks; and a due diligence and compliance service to minimise Carillion’s exposure to fraud, bribery and corruption.

Carillion senior solicitor, Tonia Simpson, said: “Having CAS there for support is a really valuable resource for us. What is really great is it allows all of those repetitive and time-consuming tasks to be dealt with quickly and easily, so … I am able to really focus on those areas where my knowledge and expertise are most needed.”

CAS intends to expand by offering more services to other external clients. It is currently piloting an ‘Ask Legal’ service for procurement team staff and commencing a pilot review of contracts worth up to half a million pounds.
