The English Premiership has come under criticism recently for allowing too many foreign footballers into the competition. This has been singled out by some as the main reason behind the apparent decline in the standards of the national team, evidenced by England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
Should we be equally concerned about the ‘invasion’ of too many foreign lawyers, with the single barrier to entry the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT)? That exam has been regarded for some time as either outdated, too lenient, or both. The concern is that there will be a gradual dilution in the quality of the profession as a whole because too many ‘weak’ candidates from other jurisdictions are allowed to become solicitors by virtue of passing the QLTT.
