As the issue of gun violence has gripped Philadelphia this summer, the First Judicial District is taking the next step to reform bail on an interim basis by increasing, to the maximum under current guidelines, the bail suggested for defendants’ alleged possession of unlicensed firearms and alleged possession of firearms by people convicted of felonies.

The current bail guidelines grid is also going to be adjusted so that defendants charged with the alleged intimidation of a witness and the alleged intimidation of a witness with a weapon also would have their suggested bail be at the maximum under current guidelines.Reform of bail and pretrial release has been on the courts’ agenda in the last two years.
