In a test case with potentially far-reaching implications on the types of scientific methodology that may be used in asbestos trials, a unanimous state Supreme Court has declined to endorse the theory that exposure to one fiber of asbestos is tantamount to a lot.

In so holding, the justices ruled that an Allegheny County trial judge properly granted a global Frye motion on behalf of several friction-based product defendants, after a plaintiffs expert tried to advance the theory that “each and every fiber” of inhaled asbestos was a substantial contributing factor to any asbestos-related disease.
