The speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has filed a lawsuit asking a federal court to rule that it would be unconstitutional to conduct the state’s upcoming elections under decade-old House and Senate lines.

The state Supreme Court is expected to drop an opinion within the week explaining its unprecedented decision to reject and remand the maps approved by the state Legislative Reapportionment Commission in December. But Speaker Samuel H. Smith, R-Jefferson, did not wait for the justices’ reasoning to accuse the high court of violating both the U.S. and Pennsylvania constitutions with its decision.
