Since February, Mike Bloomquist has had a front-row seat for many of the hottest issues on Capitol Hill — from the Keystone pipeline to climate change to implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Throw in telecom and assorted issues like the health of racehorses, and it makes for a varied diet.

Bloomquist took over as general counsel to the powerful House Committee on Energy and Commerce from Jim Barnette, who served four Republican chairmen. “It’s the best job on the best committee — the catch-all committee,” he said, with the obligatory addition, “and the best chairman.” That is Representative Fred Upton (R-Mich.), who thinks highly of Bloomquist as well. “Mike’s quick wit and even demeanor have earned the trust of our committee’s members,” he said in a statement.
