Morgan, Lewis & Bockius has hired two senior lawyers from Simmons & Simmons as partners in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Karun Cariappa joins Morgan Lewis Stamford as a corporate partner in Singapore. He focuses on securities offerings across Asia, including initial public offerings, follow-on offerings and private placements. He was most recently of counsel and co-led Simmons & Simmons’ India practice from Singapore. Before that, Cariappa was an associate at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft’s legacy Hong Kong office, Jones Day in Singapore and at the legacy Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co. in India.

Helen Fok, who was most recently counsel at Simmons, joins the Hong Kong office as an investment management partner. She specializes in securities regulation and bank licensing. Before her eight-month stint at Simmons, Fok had two stints at Clifford Chance for a total of 10-and-a-half years. In between the two stints, Fok was in-house at U.S. bank Morgan Stanley, as vice president of private wealth management. Before Clifford Chance, she practiced at Slaughter and May.

The Philadelphia-based firm has been expanding in Asia in recent years. In Singapore, Morgan Lewis merged with 80-lawyer local firm Stamford Law Corp. in 2015—the first such merger between an international firm and a local firm in the closely regulated city-state. It operates in Singapore as Morgan Lewis Stamford.

Early last year, Morgan Lewis recruited a total of 13 partners from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe—11 to its Hong Kong office and one each for Beijing and Shanghai. The firm added two more partners in Hong Kong before the year ended, hiring litigation partner Charles Mo from Winston & Strawn and fund formation partner Alice Huang from Chinese firm Fangda Partners.

In 2016, Morgan Lewis took over Dentons’ legacy Shanghai office of 23 lawyers, including five partners. In February of last year, Morgan Lewis added a five-lawyer China employment team from Simmons & Simmons, including a Shanghai partner.

Including its 10-lawyer office in Tokyo, Morgan Lewis has about 44 partners in Asia.
