Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has hired Jones Day corporate veteran Hilary Winter as the expansive US law firm moves to bolster its City M&A practice.

Winter joined Orrick today (4 February) after 23 years with Jones Day and legacy City practice Gouldens. The departure will be seen as notable as Winter was one of Jones Day’s highest profile corporate partners and was instrumental in Gouldens’ decision to merge with Jones Day in 2003.

Following the merger she took on a role heading the UK corporate team but in 2005 was replaced by current practice head John Phillips.

Winter specialises in corporate finance and M&A matters working with corporates, banks and other financial institutions. Her recent deals at Jones Day include advising AgCert on its main market listing and Hansteen Holdings, Carluccios and Plexus on their floats on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM).

Past deals include advising Nova Information Systems on its £84m takeover of Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank in 2004 and Collins Stewart on its £251m acquisition of rival UK broker Tullett in 2003.

The move is the second lateral hire in corporate for Orrick’s London arm in recent months following its October hire of former Mintz Levin corporate head Lena Hodge. Hodge’s practice focuses on advising issuers and underwriters on AIM.

The US-based Orrick has been attempting to build up its profile in the UK after in 2005 taking on a nine-partner team from Coudert Brothers.

Both firms were unavailable for comment.
