Hong Kong has made legislative changes that will require local courts to obtain government approval before a foreign lawyer can represent a client in national security cases.
The amendments were made to the Legal Practitioner Ordinance on May 10, 2023, after months of challenges from local courts and discussions with Beijing over foreign lawyer participation on national security cases in the city.
