U.K. firm Leigh Day is representing more than 11,000 residents from the Niger Delta, an oil producing region of Nigeria, who have accused Debevoise & Plimpton client Shell of causing oil pollution that has devastated the community.
The case, filed at London’s High Court, marks the latest environmental claim against the oil giant, adding to one brought by members of Nigeria’s Bille community in 2015, with Shell accused of causing oil pollution in the region and avoiding a clean-up.
