We’re a couple of weeks into 2023 and one thing is clear. Law firms everywhere are obsessed with the U.S. Even if they don’t have a presence out there, law leaders are anxious to know about what’s happening stateside, big and small, because the U.S. informs nearly everything that happens in the global industry.

One perturbing piece of news emanating from New York centred on Goodwin Procter’s major layoffs. A must-read deep dive by Jessie Yount unearthed some of the finer grain that explains something about why the firm slashed 5% of its timekeepers and staff. Though the cuts—the culmination of years of over-hiring—are confined to U.S. offices for the time being, readers everywhere will yearn to know why and, crucially, where next. London, perhaps?
