Herbert Smith Freehills is to shutter its Moscow base after more than two decades with a presence in the city, as more law firms decide on the future of their offices in Russia.
The firm said in a statement on Thursday: ”Following a review of our Russia business, we have taken the decision to close our office in the country. This is a complicated process, being undertaken under difficult circumstances.
“Our Moscow office has long been a valued and successful part of our business. We are working closely with the team there to support our colleagues who have been directly impacted by this decision.”
It added that it will be “bringing to an end” any work associated with the Russian State.
HSF has operated a presence in Russia since 1999 and its Moscow base comprises 111 people according to its website including 55 lawyers, 10 of which are partners.
The firm statement added: “We strongly condemn the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and are appalled by the humanitarian consequences.
“We are supporting our global charity partner, Médecins sans Frontières, to help with its work during this humanitarian crisis.”
