Google experienced a huge loss Wednesday when the EU General Court ruled that the tech giant had violated the competition rules of the 27-member bloc by boosting its own comparison shopping service over competitors in search results—a major win for the EU’s competition chief and a ruling that is likely to result in more investigations into a business model that has been embraced by many tech giants.

The case followed from the appeal of Google and parent company Alphabet against a €2.4 billion fine the tech giant was handed by the European Commission’s competition chief, Margrethe Vestager, in 2017.
