At a time when anti-Asian hate crimes in the city of Vancouver have been soaring—increasing 717% between 2019 to 2020—the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers of British Columbia has produced “But I Look Like a Lawyer,” a documentary on discrimination and bias in the legal profession.

A noticeable spike in anti-Asian racism over the last 18 months can be connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the legal group, known by the acronym FACL-BC, began developing the documentary well before then, said Audrey Jun, a Vancouver trusts and estates lawyer who is the documentary’s executive producer. It was inspired by a similar 2017 documentary spearheaded by B.C.’s Indigenous legal community.
