The chair of Norton Rose Fulbright Canada, Walied Soliman, has won a C$500,000 defamation award in a case against an alt-right social media commentator who, among other things, accused the prominent lawyer of supporting terrorism and the introduction of Sharia law in Canada.

“I find as a fact that … [Daniel] Bordman defamed Mr. Soliman using Internet social and alternative news media. The defamation began before and continued after the commencement of this litigation and it continues to this day, and it should be enjoined,” Ontario Superior Court Justice Paul Perrell wrote in a summary judgment decision issued on Oct. 21.
