Ireland’s data protection authority, considered by some to be one of the laxer offices in Europe, has now scaled up its data protection with a €225 million fine against the WhatsApp messaging app owned by Facebook Inc.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) announced the decision Thursday, the result of a four-year-long investigation, and reflects a shift toward increasing data regulator activity a month after Luxembourg slapped a record-breaking €746 million fine on Amazon.
