Florence Mugerwa qualified last month as an associate in King & Spalding’s London office. Originally from Uganda, she joined the firm as a trainee. She talks to King & Spalding Atlanta counsel Naana Frimpong, originally from Ghana, about their different paths into law and the importance of diverse representation in the industry, as we continue to feature experiences for U.K. Black History Month.

Naana Frimpong: You officially qualified as a solicitor in our London office last month. Congratulations! That is a culmination of a long journey. What inspired you to go into the legal profession in the first place? Florence Mugerwa: Thank you so much. Qualification is just the beginning of what will hopefully be a very exciting journey, although I did not really consider going into the law until I was in my mid-teens. As a family, we travelled a lot during my formative years. I was born in Uganda and educated at various stages in Uganda, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, the Netherlands and the UK. From this experience, I knew I wanted an international career, but not sure in which sector. When deciding on universities and degree choices, my parents were based in The Hague at time.
