Lawyers On Demand (LOD) is no stranger to Alternative Business Structure (ABS) innovation, having been the first flexible legal service provider in the UK – pairing freelance lawyers with clients who need a more versatile legal offering.

LOD bagged the ABS prize for its latest venture, developed in conjunction with DLA Piper – a service that allows law firms to ditch the need to build their own flexible lawyering businesses by outsourcing their requirements to LOD instead, tapping LOD’s resources of lawyers, knowhow and technology.

The venture ticks off a number of legal industry firsts: it is the first time a flexible legal service provider and a law firm have formally and publicly collaborated to create a service of this type, and the first commercial deal where a company like LOD has set up and managed a law firm’s flexible lawyer team.

It was also the company’s first international commercial deal, with the service already up and running in the UK and Australia. LOD said the venture can serve as a blueprint for similar collaborations with other law firms and help reset how firms think about flexible working and resourcing. One judge noted that the LOD and DLA Piper tie-up is market-changing, with ripples that extend way beyond the UK.
