When the US Department of Defence turned to Mayer Brown for help in Afghanistan, the US firm’s lawyers were little prepared for what doing business in Kabul would mean. Ian Coles reports

Mayer Brown was first retained by the US Department of Defence (through the Task Force for Business & Stability Operations) in April 2011 to assist the Afghan Ministry of Mines in its efforts to develop the mining industry in Afghanistan. Some 18 months after that original retention, several lawyers from Mayer Brown have frequently made the journey to Kabul (and back!).
