LG has begun a redundancy consultation which is set to affect 18 individuals across the firm, covering both lawyers and support staff.

The firm announced the consultation today (9 November), with the cuts attributed to an attempt to align "resources with what remains a difficult market".

LG managing partner Hugh Maule (pictured) said: "This is a very regrettable but prudent action to ensure that we align our resources with what remains a difficult market. We are ensuring the firm is in the best possible shape with the right balance of lawyers and support staff to best serve our clients.

"Whilst we are reducing headcount in some parts of our business, we are continuing to invest strategically to grow our business both internationally and in the UK."

LG held talks with Field Fisher Waterhouse this summer over a merger which could have created a firm just outside the UK top 20 with combined revenues of £150m. However, the two firms called off the talks in June, with Field Fisher now in discussions with Osborne Clarke over a tie-up.

The news comes after a spate of redundancies this week, with Pinsent Masons outlining plans yesterday (8 November) to cut around 15 support staff after announcing its second redundancy consultation since its merger with Scots firm McGrigors went live in May.

Meanwhile, Slaughter and May recently concluded a redundancy consultation which will see 44 secretarial staff leave the firm, the vast majority of which have opted to take voluntary redundancy.

Mayer Brown also announced in September this year it was shedding up to 20 support and legal staff in a second round of redundancies for 2012.
